We shopped for months to find the right slabs. Slabs that were large enough but also had the right amount of character. These claro walnut slabs came in at 4″ thick and almost 500 lbs a piece.
After trees are cut into slabs they sit to dry for years and are often finished in a kiln. All the moisture leaving and seasonal movement cause the slabs to crack, bow and cup. The bowing and cupping are sorted out by surfacing and sanding the material and in this case the cracks are repaired with brass bow ties.
